Motive Real Estate Group's Giving Back ProgramOne Year and 32 Homes For Homeless Families

February 2018

When John Staab founded Motive Real Estate Group in late 2016, he did it for his love of the business, from finding the perfect space for a specific client to meeting new people and establishing great relationships and lasting friendships. For him, it’s always been about the people and helping to provide a space for happiness, family, and security, along with all of the opportunity that owning real estate provides. But that wasn’t enough. He has always felt strongly that everyone, regardless of their means, deserves the benefits that a real home allows. That’s why he’s committed to fighting homelessness.

“I really want to make a big impact, and I think Motive can do that,” commented John. “With Motive, we can make meaningful contributions that will better people’s lives. I did a lot of research into companies that I admire for their philanthropic work—companies like TOM’s Shoes, Patagonia, Warby Parker—and I got really inspired. That’s when I decided on the ‘one for one’ model.”

Each time Motive helps a client buy or sell a home, they commit to working with an international agency to build a home for a family in need. Of late, they have been working with The Butterfly Tree project in Zambian rural communities that have been decimated by the HIV and AIDS epidemic. Most of the working-age adults have been eliminated in the already poverty-stricken towns, leaving many orphaned children who are either taken in by grandparents with little to no means or left to fend for themselves. The Butterfly Tree provides housing, schools, clinics and clean drinking water.

In Motive’s first year of business, they’ve built 32 homes for families in Zambia.

Last year, John made his first trip to Zambia. He was the only volunteer building homes in the Mukuni village and worked alongside the villagers. “They’re so happy, it’s so incredible to me that their lives are so full of joy when they have experienced so much loss and live in the worst possible conditions.”  John continued, “It’s changed my outlook on life, and I am so grateful to them for that. It’s also attracted so many wonderful people to me and my business. I have a great team of realtors, and our clients are the most amazing, caring people. I can’t imagine doing business in any other way.”
